Men That Stand
To whom that may understand
Hello, my name is Deon Briggery and I have created a nonprofit organization. Which is named Men That stand.
This nonprofit organization will and have helped fathers with custody of their children in crisis go through transition. But before I explain why, I believe this will be a nationwide changing event for men, for generations to come. Let me tell you, my story.
One day my son's mother pulled out of a neutral custody agreement that came with a bag, a child and an excuse. That would be the day that changed my life forever. Not having a place of my own and my child not being able to stay with me. I walked out the door, with that same bag I became homeless with a child. Now I find myself living with friends and starting to run out of resources as well. I found a place where we could go but it came with a serious cost. We had to sleep on a level with women that were single, and women with kids, and being able to talk to the opposite sex was against the rules. So, as a punishment me and my son couldn’t sleep in our room but in a hallway where everyone would see us. And if it wasn't hard enough with the rules, we basically had to join them and their movement without question. Or be evicted. That doesn't help any parent so we couldn't stay there. I tried several shelters in Dallas and there were none for single fathers with children. To make a long story short, I found myself in a bad situation, having started a new job and finding a car. I'm unable to keep them due to childcare. Bringing my son to work with me four days out of the week. The only thing next to lose is our home. The money had run out and I have no more home and couldn't get a hotel or gas for transportation. It failed to the point where I had one more phone call to make. At the same time, I’m telling my son we might have to sleep in this park tonight. I made the last phone call with a person who worked with an organization that helps people in crisis. He picked us up from that same park and off to another homeless shelter we go, at least we thought. The gentleman talked to the head directors and told them about our situation before our arrival and they told him there is no room for a man with a child. It is at that moment all was lost in my mind, but GOD prevailed as always, I knew in my mind this is the reason why I believe that Men That Stand is an organization that will change men for generations to come. When you think of nonprofits for the homeless you think of Salvation Army, when you think of clothes in a nonprofit, you think of Goodwill. Now when you think of fathers you will think of Men That Stand.
It was because of my background in financial services and history in hospitality, situations and shortcomings that I believe in Men That Stand's programs are aimed to help each and every one in a way that will be beneficial to the overall growth to that person/client and society.
Yours truly.
